(1,941 posts)The way to understand the Faux Effect is to read Hitler's speeches. When it came to describing what was wrong in Germany, how it felt to be broke-ass and losing ground, Hitler could emote it. Same way Clinton could feel our pain. That kind of connection, that kind of sympathy, people respond to it. And Hitler wasn't wrong about how bad the Weimar was fucked. He wasn't wrong about describing how bad off the Allies left Germany after the war. We was working class. Before the Nazis took off, he was dirt-poor. He could legitimately claim to be of the common volk. He went off the rails when he moved from describing the problems to explaining how they came about as well as the needed solutions. But people were so swept up in the story they didn't follow through all the fiddly details.
We are getting fucked. My dad can understand how things are bad. He just falls for the GOP line about why they're bad, who the causes are. Hitler blamed the Jews, the Republicans blame brown people and liberals. Problem is you're trying to make a rational argument to someone who's swept up with emotion and fervor. You'd have as much luck debunking the Bible at a revival.
