Your example isn't quite accurate, though. Depending on what you hire the landscaper to do, he or she may expect a partial payment before beginning the contracted work. I'm an independent contractor. If I haven't been paid for a previous contract by a client, no work is going to be done by me for that contractor until that previous contract is paid. I can't tell you how many times I have had to point that out to a slow-paying client. It generally gets the check in the mail.
I also insist on partial payment of a contract before beginning work. It focuses the client's mind on the job at hand and keeps things focused for me, too.
Terms of Payment: All invoices are payable on presentation.
