(11,481 posts)Having interacted with RWers on another political board for a while a few years ago, I actually think that they BELIEVE that these positions are a majority position among the American people, even women.
I knew there was a new meme developing when one of the MOST reactionary RWer on that board started calling himself a "moderate". At first I think that it was just to claim the label and try and pull the conversation to the right. IOW, to cause the general PERCEPTION that these outlandish RW beliefs was the "norm" or "moderate". But after a while it seemed that he started BELIEVING it himself. He actually thought that most people DID think like him.
IMO, they're relying on the old Nixon "Silent Majority" along with a healthy dose of voter suppression of the Dem and left voting groups. However, I REALLY believe that since '04, the "Silent Majority" of the 21st Century is the left side of the political spectrum. The country has shifted left, but very few in the political class ON EITHER SIDE will acknowledge it. The Republicans for obvious reasons. The Dems don't want to acknowledge it because it calls into question their strategy of "triangulation" and moving further right for the last 30 years.
