(20,226 posts)class consciousness was much more powerful and socialist ideals were held much more commonly by common people than today. As desirable as it would be - I cannot see that happening at least for the foreseeable future. However, sometimes movements spring up very quickly and unexpectedly - I would rejoice at history proving me completely wrong on this. But as long as a vote for a progressive third party means in the vast majority of cases - increasing the possibility of some right-wing crackpot winning - I can't see the development of a progressive alternative to the Democratic Party on the national level. Besides not only do most rank and file Republicans think the Democratic Party is already an extreme left-wing party - most rank and file Democrats think that the Democratic Party is already a progressive workers' party - however naïve that may be.
