Anyone candidate running for election while making an excuse for having gotten behind another let's-send-even-more-American-jobs-to-foreign-countries "free trade" agreement, whether (R) or (D), is going to face some backlash.

Not all voters are Democrats or Republicans. There are Independents who also have to be considered.
