(1,980 posts)State/regional identifications are extremely common. You're essentially claiming that New York liberal doesn't identify as a New Yorker first and foremost, which is ridiculous. The same goes for California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Chicago, individual New England states, and the Pacific Northwest. This claim is just patently ridiculous unless you've never met someone from another region when they're not in their native region (i.e. meeting transplants from other regions in the south).
It blows my mind that anyone would attack us for defending the south. I'd like to see the reactions if we had an honest discussion of the widespread segregation present in the northern half of the country. Or perhaps we should discuss race relations in California? Maybe the influence of finance in New York? Hey, we could talk about the atrocious murder rate in Chicago!
When you call us "overly defensive," it's a laugh. Any time outsiders want to have a "talk" about the south, it really means that our intellectual "betters" want to lecture us poor, dumb hicks. Well, given that Wall Street is on your turf and it's exploiting you guys too now, maybe you could try cleaning up your own backyard before carpetbagging your way into ours.
