(84,711 posts)folks who think very differently politically from each other. With the partisan divides of the past decades so overwhelming plus the population and racial diversification in the last 40 years or so plus the increased mobility of those seeking employment opportunities out of the areas in which they grew up it is a challenging New America. We can find that our next door neighbors and associates can be very different from us politically. Maybe they listen to Limbaugh and other RW Radio and watch Faux News while we listen to NPR, view MSNBC or PBS with Bill Moyers or maybe watch TYT's and Malloy or others on the Left on the Internet.
But we are much less homogenized than the America of the early and mid to late 20th Century by family identification, religious affiliation and cultural, ethnic background..except in the very Deep South. (I exclude Texas from this). Yet we segment out in our identification politically more than anytime I remember in my lifetime.. This map shows that there's a lot of red...but..you can also see the shades in-between and where the pockets of the ultra party faithful tend to congregate.
That's why I think it shows how some of us here on DU can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the politics of the area we live in.
