(1,415 posts)and no, I don't feel bad about her post. Biologically, it's damn hard work for a woman with three kids to look that good. It takes effort and an iron will.
"Ooh, how society views women!!! Ermahgerd!"
People are so shallow -- yes, the ones complaining about how shallow society is. Truth is, obesity is a MAJOR problem in this country, with two of the top three three causes of death in this country (heart disease and heart attacks kill more than 40 percent) being linked to poor lifestyle. Exercise and proper diet are also tied to preventing cancer (12.49 percent of all deaths a year), stroke (9.66 percent) and limiting infections (23 percent). Fat people take more time off from work for illness, and have more joint issues and other conditions.
It's like smoking. I don't want to get lumped in with people like Ayn Rand, who smoked her whole life and then expected everyone else to pay for it.
You don't have to look like a frickin' supermodel, but weighing 200 pounds when you're 5 feet tall is not healthy. Sitting around criticizing someone who looks better than you because you don't have the inclination to get up and do something about yourself might make you feel better right now, but in the end it does NOTHING. Stop putting 300 calories of sugar and cream in your coffee, get off the sofa and go DO something about it. You can't find an hour a week to walk around the block or play with the dog? Really? Let's do some math:
168 hours in a week - 56 hours for 8-hour sleep a night = 112 hours awake a week. 112 - 60 hours of work (that's a big overestimate for the majority of people) = 52 hours a week not working or sleeping, or almost 7.5 hours a day completely free.
You can't squeeze two hours a week out? Wow, remind me never to work in your field...
Preventative care WORKS. Health insurance is fantastic for early screenings, but it starts at home long before you go get that cough looked at by the doctor. THAT is how I view exercise and something resembling a proper diet.
I've been trying to do better myself. I've lost 15 pounds since this summer (mostly because I now ride a bike the 4 mile round trip to work every day). I've been eating better, too -- and not by much. The biggest change was a green salad a day and I stopped going out drinking every weekend. Hell, looking at it, I'm barely trying.
Even what I'm doing is better for me, it's better for my career, it's better for the others in my insurance pool, and better for everyone in general.
