(2,205 posts)I used to go to 1980s Miami in the winter every year for excitement.
It reminded me of Saigon right before Tet 1968
Hardly anyone you would run into spoke English
The homeless living under free ways in card board boxes
Rampant public urination by numerous intoxicated men and women
Every other car was either a Mercedes, Rolls, Ferrari or other extreme luxury car.
The rest of the cars were beat up junkers, that smoked oil and barely ran
It was warm and humid in the morning and a fog of exhaust choked the city
The smell of dead fish and rotting garbage washing up on shore
Boats touting gambling crowding the waterfront
Palm trees swaying in the Breeze
From the open hotel window at night the sound of Gunfire emanated from Liberty City
Pan handlers and squeegee men prowling the streets
The only thing missing were sand bag barriers in front of stores, hotels and restaurants
It was inexpensive if one was careful, exciting, unexpectedly dangerous and a reminder of my adventurous days of fighting for freedom in a foreign land and helping eliminate Kommunists and other anti-democratic peasants.
As I became older Miami became much more expensive and almost tediously going upscale for the uber rich
