(26,357 posts)You're supposed to take in about 2,000 calories a day, give or take a few.
And people think that's what they're taking in.
But I found when I was a little bit overweight (I never was more than slightly into the a-little-overweight category), that when I really watched how I ate, counted all the calories, and was completely honest with myself about my snacking, and my portion sizes, that I was going waaaay over.
And I think that's part of America's eating culture. When you go out to eat, the restaurant gives you a mountain of food, and people think that's a normal meal. No.
So when people say "Yeah, I watch what I eat, but everything I eat goes straight to my ass.", I wonder if they're really looking, or if they're assuming.
Because I've been there. I let myself go for a while, then I took a strict look at what I was eating, cut my calories, kept strict track of my calories, and then hit the gym, and the weight came off. Now I'm well in the green zone of the BMI.
Also, exercise must be done with dieting. If you diet, but don't exercise, you'll have a very hard time sticking to the diet. And once you stop dieting, you'll start overeating again. Your body has a weight set point, that if you're overweight, is set too high. And it WILL drive you to overeat.
There is one, and only one, scientifically documented and proven way to lower your body's set point, and make it easier for you to stick to a diet and keep your weight down. HIT THE GYM. An hour a day, 3-5 days a week. Exercise lowers your set point. Nothing else does.
Diet + exercise = healthy weight and making yourself look good. You don't have to look like the snoot in the OP. I certainly don't - my genes aren't nearly that good, but you can turn the health knob and the looking-good knob up a few notches.
