(13,759 posts)the good old days of slavery is simply denial. Are there good people in the South? Absolutely. Was Nixon's Southern strategy successful for the Republicans since 1968? Yes. If you look at the percentage of Republican bigots from the South in Congress you get the impression that the South is a different culture than most of the country. Are there radical right wingers from the North in Congress? Yes. Scott Garrett (R NJ-5) comes to mind. A large segment of NJ-5 is closer to slave state mentality.
The question is: Would we all be better off if we lived in a political environment that is in line with how we see our neighbors?
The Republican Party has successfully isolated the South for cheap political gain. Slave state legislatures have done everything in their power to marginalize Democrats/minorities so as to prevent them for holding office or even voting. As for the number of virulent bigots holding office, the South is home to that majority. So if your a normal person residing in a slave state life must be a struggle living next to those who would embrace segregation or worse slavery and lynchings.
Living in the North with friends and relatives who cringe at the thought of a half white president can be frustrating at times, but in the South, seeing a half white President as illegitimate is the norm. So go ahead and flame me and get this post removed, but the numbers don't lie.
