(32,626 posts)I am guilty of using the broad brush, particularly with Texas and Florida. Prior to 2000 I did not know or care what happened down south. I lived in Florida for 6 years, and because there were no black people where I lived or worked I saw no signs of racism...except for the staggering poverty in black neighboorhoods. Bush vs. Gore and the internet have made my world much smaller, and stories I would prefer not to have read about...things that have happened partcularly in Texas, have had an impact. The federal government and the actions of elected officials have had a huge impact. There are racist people everywhere, but I do not think systemic racism is as apparent anywhere else. I need to once again take a break from all political/news sites, so I will soon know or care very little about what happens anywhere else.
