The Catholic bishops, Santorum, assorted "personhood" laws and ballot measures around the country, attacking Planned Parenthood, vaginal probes, etc.

This was the latest thing with which to bash Obama, and since she came forward in the pushback against the all-male contraception panel he went to town on her in the nastiest, most personal ways to drive people away from here and whatever she was associated with -- basically an ACORNing on her.

He probably expected a lot of noise from the usual quarters, but didn't anticipate how much the other things have exposed the radicalism and motivated people to push back. So instead of statements from NOW or Media Matters and other thing's he'd just blow off, he has to both double down for his regular audience and make motions such as "apologizing" to not wreck his own gravy train.
