78. "Me and my interests"

This is where folks lose me -- when they say they're only in favor of things that are in 'their' interest. What about supporting the moral and right thing, even if it has absolutely no impact on YOU? For example, I'm way beyond child-bearing age, but I'm in full support of a woman's right to choose to terminate a pregnancy, for ANY reason. I'm straight but believe in equal rights for all. I already have excellent health insurance, so I don't have a dog in that fight either. But I support EVERYBODY'S right to have what I already have. I'm well fed -- not hungry and not worried about my next meal. I have enough money, right now anyway, to pay my bills. I could list ten other issues we support, as progressives and Democrats, that I, personally, have no vested interest in. As compassionate human beings, we must stand up, even if there's no direct impact on us as individuals.
