In reply to the discussion: Following the media recently? Ever since the GOP took the USA to the brink of economic collapse... [View all]wandy
(3,539 posts)90. Now, now. I never said that I didn't like Win XP its just that.........
Windows XP Support Ends in April 2014.
The trick here is what does that mean to you.
I know people who use XP only for E-mail and to serf the web. In their case it may be no big problem. Worse comes to worse even on older hardware they may find Ubuntu is not only free but may be a nicer experience.

Check it out.
I also have a customer who uses XP to do payroll. They have Win 7 capable hardware but they just won't spring for the upgrade.
Business critical? Bad idea! Yup, typical republican.
This is a nice piece that may help you decide if it is time for you to upgrade........
What Do All of These XP End of Life Dates Represent?
April 8, 2014: Per Microsofts official Lifecycle policy on Windows XP, extended support for the platform goes dark on this day. Outside of very critical security flaws that may crop up, no more general patches will be released for the OS to fix functional or security related issues.
What Happens to Customer PCs on XP After April 8, 2014?
Nothing, really. They will continue to work as normal and there will not be any kind of limitations imposed on the OS crippling its usage. But its the unknown that users should be warned about to the fullest extent. Microsoft has publicly stated that no new patches will be released for the OS after April 2014 (outside of very critical security flaws found.) Just as is the case for Windows 98 and Windows 2000 now, driver releases for new hardware that comes out will start to become non-existent for XP likely around or slightly after the April 2014 timeline. Customers who purchase new hardware even for otherwise fully capable systems may start to run into compatibility issues. Third party solutions arise to get around these driver issues, but they are not always 100% guaranteed for all scenarios. The bottom line? Using XP after April 2014 is an at your own risk situation for customers.

From what I have seen so far, Win 7 is more stable than XP and even the 64 bit version has no problem with "most" older 32 bit apps.
Win 7 Pro can "host" a second level XP system. This may help with the most stubborn aps, although I've never had to prove it.
At any rate, more information is better than less.
Just for the heck of it, do read up on Ubuntu.
