18. My best friend did 23andme and had her father do it too. They found out....

...that he fathered a son back in the 40's when he was in college. They broke up, the girl never told him she was carrying his child, and put the baby up for adoption. While he was thrilled to find he had a son (he's got 2 daughters), he is haunted by the fact that the poor girl never told him, and went through it all on her own. He said he would have married her, and was sad to find out the woman remained unmarried and poor (both are in their 80s).

On the other hand, my BFF now has a half brother and a niece and nephew. They're all getting to know each other and they're all thrilled that they finally found each other.

I'm doing this with my father too (women must have a male relative also submit a swab if they want a complete picture of their DNA). I know all the skeletons in his closet though!
