They currently have the House and the Supreme Court. What would happen if they could also get hold of the Senate and the White House?

Broadly speaking, blacks, browns, gays, women, the elderly, the poor and the disabled would all be screwed beyond imagination. Forget about any program aimed at helping people. Forget about empathy, decency and simple fairness. Forget about the existence of a middle class. Think Dante’s version of hell.

It seems unlikely that they could win the White House, or even the Senate. But they could certainly steal both given the number of states they currently govern and control. Voter suppression, “cleansed” voter rolls, and “lost” or “misplaced” ballots can work wonders. Think Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004 which gave us eight years of Bush/Cheney. But even those eight years could look like a pretty good deal given how grotesque the Republican/Teabagger Party has become.

I don’t believe that they could actually gain control of all the levers of power. But you never know. History shows us what well-organized, ruthless minorities are capable of. The thought of it is totally terrifying.
