to keep from being so isolated in RedNeckLand. Otherwise I could never have stood to retire here, and I really had no other viable options. Maine used to be very affordable, but that was back in my salad years. When I was searching for a last home, I found a place in Calais where a lot of my ancestors settled after fleeing Ireland, and a simple small home carried higher property taxes than monthly rent did back then. I tell people I'm too poor to rent almost anywhere, and it's true. My economic security rests mainly on paying cash up front for almost everything, especially real estate. In rural RedNeckLand, my property tax on a hundred-year-old fixer runs $184 annually. They seem to take the age of the house into account also, because several years ago when almost everyone got an increase, my cost dropped from $220. So even with very slow renovations, I can avoid debt. Nothing in the world terrifies me much worse than the idea of personal debt.
