Dunno where you're getting your history, but you might wanna try another metaphor.

There was a relatively "mad race" at the time to get a heavier than air machine off the ground. People had been flying gliders for some time. The Wright Brothers weren't the only ones by any stretch, who were trying and they were all getting close. Truth is, although they get some credit for being "first', most of what we think of as an airplane these days comes from other contemporaries of theirs. The wing warping technique they used was quickly dropped, even by them, for the use of ailerons. The "tail in front" arrangement of theirs quickly lost out to the more conventional arrangement of a combined structure in the back. Probably their two best accomplishments were wind tunnel use, and the propeller, which was quite efficient.

I mean, there are always hicks and nay sayers on anything (including evolution and global warming). But anyone knowledgeable in the subject knew how close many were getting. The Smithsonian was actually funding a few efforts.
