(15,720 posts)Kennedy says "we can't expect these countries to do everything the way we want to do them. . . . We can't make everyone in our image, and there are a good many people who don't want to go in our image," and so on. That's the point he made in 1954 in the Senate and the one stuck to throughout his political career: the US can only exercise so much influence over other countries, and nationalist movements should be respected, including in Algeria and Indochina. That's in the first video at the link; the second video, strangely enough, cuts to a color segment on Austinland right after the two anchors agree to let Kennedy re-do his answers to three Vietnam questions, but neither are shown. So we still don't have a source for the statements in the Canadian transcript.
