Most smokers know that this is a really unhealthy habit, and that they are addicts.
And I think that most morbidly, unnaturally obese people understand this is a very unhealthy lifestyle. It isn't like the guy is a little chubby or "big boned". He was one cheeseburger away from the big one. It does appear he has taken positive action to try to put himself into a healthier place, and I wish him all the best at that effort. But given that he spent decades destroying his body, I do his fitness for the most important position in the world remains a very fair question.
It is not fair to make jokes. I hope you can recognize the difference between hurtful jokes and legitimate questions about fitness for duty.
