Back in 1991 when I was looking to get my first computer, I looked at both PCs and Apples. The Apple product would have cost twice as much, not had color, and far, far fewer add-ons like games to purchase. The choice was easy. I've stayed with PCs ever since.
Recently, a friend, a happy Apple user, gave me an iPod that had come with something she'd bought at Apple and didn't need because she already had one. I tried to set it up and download music. Must say here, that I've long wanted an iPod because of their general usefulness. Anyway, no luck. From what I could tell there were maybe two songs I could download, neither of which I'd heard of. Then my son, a pretty good computer user, came to visit and he tried. He couldn't figure out how to get it to accept my own music already on my computer.
A few months later in a conversation with another Apple user -- "It's so easy! Just do online and download" -- with the unspoken assumption that I must be an idiot, she then said, "Oh, with that older one you need to go to the Apple store so they can unlock something."
Easy? Intuitive? Just go online and download? No, I apparently have to schlepp the 45 minute drive to Albuquerque as there's no Apple store in Santa Fe, just to have them unlock the stupid thing? Well, fuck Apple. If there stuff really is so easy to use why can't I figure it out? Why do I have to drive 50 miles so they can unlock something that I should be able to use right off the shelf?
Apple's intense commitment to not letting anyone design anything for them, their business plan of locking you into Apple and Apple only, is beyond annoying.
