(6,452 posts)This "reliability" argument is faulty. Maybe back in the 90s you would get a compaq "knucklebuster" PC and it would overheat on you and ruin the motherboard. Most PCs today are better, but you have the choice to build a less stable one if you want to fit your budget and needs.
I've been through exactly 3 PCs in the last 13 years, one of which I overheated the video card on with an overambitious build. The other worked fine until I decided to upgrade, and I'm on the third which I built 5 or 6 years ago. Zero replacements or problems.
Unfortunately, there is no statistical database of PC vs Mac hardware failures. Hence, every single argument is anecdotal and very frustrating. I can give you anecdotes from my circle about people with macs, which are supposed to "just work", yet have broken down due to hardware faults. I suspect the marketing has lingered in peoples' minds, and will until the day they die, because this is purely anecdotal.
The price differential is way too enormous to justify Apple's dubious claims of being more reliable, but hey that's the market for you.
