The fanatics buy their phones off contract so they can always have the latest and greatest technology. And the normal users can be assured that no matter when they get a phone they can always get the latest and greatest if they like, or if they want to get a phone for *free*, yes, you can actually get a really nice smartphone for free, they can do that by opting for one with lesser specs. Choice is key. The lack of choice in hardware and software, the closed ecosystem, the attempt to make you use only what Apple decides you should use is such a turn off.
For disclosure/info: I do have a Mac desktop. I need it to run a particular software program that windows doesn't run. I really like it. But I stay away from anything that's going to tie me down to using only certain software for my daily activities, to keep me in a particular ecosystem. I prefer to make my own choices thank you very much. I use my PC laptop for most other stuff, my hobbies, because it cost half as much for better specs and because there's software for my hobbies that just isn't available for the Mac since it's written by fellow hobbyists.
