As for hearing the differences between vinyl and digital, to my ears, digital sounds better, crisp. Vinyl sounds as muddy as mp3s (to my ears.)
I don't begrudge others from going with mp3s, either. The problem is that most outlets only offer mp3s and I want higher quality digital, or FLAC. Some of the bands I like have started to offer FLAC downloads, but not through Amazon (I suspect iTunes doesn't offer FLAC either, though they may offer Apple's proprietary version.) Bandcamp seems to be one that makes albums available for FLAC-downloads, and I'm sure there are others.
