(17,824 posts)If it was dead, Obama would have quit working on it. Obama's a lot of things, but I wouldn't call him a quitter. He's worked on this particular project a long time and he's not going to just give it up. Let the lobbyists start spreading around some money in Congress and we'll see who's really opposed. We can't take our eyes off the stove for a minute, unfortunately. As soon as we do, something will start boiling over.
Social Security still has a good chance of being cut. It all hinges on the elections next year. If the GOP holds the House, Obama's going to see it as Grand Bargain time. If the Dems win it all, maybe they'll listen to us and lift the cap. The 2014 election is crucial. We don't know what things are going to look like after 2016. If we can win it in 2014, we'll need to get a lot of work done before Jabba gets in the White House and who knows what happens to Congress. So everything depends on next year's elections. That should be our focus.
