He is apparently the first white politician in U.S. history elected to a major office with a black spouse by his side.

I would say that US Senator is a pretty "major" office, as they go, and Bill Cohen married Janet Langhart while he was still a Senator. However, he wasn't "elected" with her by his side--he'd already been elected, to both the House and the Senate.

He later went on to be SECDEF and Janet became "First Lady of the Pentagon."
