(9,116 posts)Definitely getting a bit upscale, but it is one of the nicer urban neighborhoods. I'd take it over Pacific Beach any day of the week.
It's the streets east of Hillcrest that are dodgy. Especially those just north and south of Trojan (I think... or maybe Orange). There's some Somali and Vietnamese enclaves there that have their own charm, but there's some gang strongholds tucked in, too. The areas along the main drags are ok, but the side streets gave me the willies.
Generally speaking, I liked San Diego quite a bit. Still, as far as California's cities go, it has a very vocal conservative element. Coming from New England, I was a bit put off by the homophobia and the racism I encountered there. I actually had an employer tell everyone in the office--at an office meeting--not to vote for Jerry Brown.
As far as food goes, I miss Mexican. There was a hole in the wall joint off University called Gualberto's. The enchiladas were phenomenal. My wife swears by their horchata.
