(16,296 posts)as a youngster sitting around the kitchen table with my extended family when the topic of the local priest, who publicly complained about his low wages, came up. First, I was shocked that a priest got paid anything. I, naive and young, thought it was a calling and somehow they just lived and existed outside the sphere of going to work every day. Well, my relatives went off talking about how he got a new car every year from the local dealership, how he lived in the best house in the best part of town, getting "gifts" from parishioners, how he collected money from funerals,baptisms, confirmations, marriages and all the rest of the things he took care of as his duties. The anger and sarcasm was as thick as they railed on about the perks of his job. Then, of course, they were good people who went to church on Sunday
