What does it matter if the assault on the victim in the first example was over before he knew what happened?

Just because it worked out badly for him, that still doesn't deny him, or anyone else, the right to take lethal defensive action on their assailants by any means available.

"The only way for an individual to stop that is for a gun or knife fancier to identify "a threat" at a distance. So how are you going to do that?"

"A distance"? Like the guy with the knife?

He might not have stopped it from happening, but he stopped a bad situation from becoming worse.
