When I was stationed at Fort Knox, and just becoming enlightened to the struggle for gay rights, I was surprised at how gay-friendly much of Louisville was. I was told that Louisville had something like the fifth-largest gay community in the country.

I had a number of friends, who, through their kindness and openness, educated me, a soldier in the then-still highly homophobic US Army, about the reality of being gay in modern America. They helped make me the raging liberal I am today. Thanks to all of them.

Come on, Kentucky! Join the 21st Century! Louisville did!
