55. The digital converter tuner boxes are readily available for cheap at flea markets and thrift stores

Since the converter boxes were subsidized by the government they were subject to fairly strict standards and often pick up over the air TV better than the OTA tuners built into more modern TVs which aren't subject to any quality standards at all. The TV manufacturers assume that everyone is on cable and good sensitivity and selectivity for OTA TV signals are quite far down their list of priorities when designing their tuners.
