(22,308 posts)25. The most reasonable explanation that comes to mind for me..
(right off the top of my head of course) ...is that after the impact that created the Moon, it was a huge spinning mass of liquid (lava). This spun most of the heavier materials out to what eventually became the crust. Then that outer level cooled first and solidified.
The interior would have cooled last. Since the volume of the rock would decrease as it cooled, and because the outer crust had already solidified, the inner most portion would have an area that could loosely be referred to as "hollow". At least it would be an area with far lower density than the outer layer.
It doesn't seem like that big a deal.
