In reply to the discussion: Here is a "WTF" moment: Carrie Underwood tells her critics to "find Jesus". [View all]Laura PourMeADrink

Carrie is going to be criticized no matter what she does if she steps into another area. She got her start on American Idol and in some eyes that's a mortal sin. How can anybody possibly be any good if that's how they started never mind that it is the only possible chance for many. That comes up over and over. [/div class="excerpt"]
Do not agree at all. Sound of Music is beloved by so many people. I can't imagine that most people wanted her to fail - would think it was a very small percentage. BUT it was just way too obvious and blatant that her speaking, dancing, and acting were miserably bad that even the non-cynics couldn't ignore it.
Again - disagree. I don't care who you are or what your background is -- the role demands that songs are sung with a certain tone and that words are spoken in a manner that "fits" the place and the era. (Just think about movies you have seen with the finest actors - whose performances suck because they don't get the accent right). If it isn't, then the performance sticks out like a sore thumb - which is exactly what happened here. If you noticed - all the other actors spoke proper English almost British sounding - she spoke with 2013 affectations right out of the gate. I saw the special on how they cast the show. they said that they spent a lot of time taking the "country" sound out of her singing. I think they succeeded there - but probably ran out of time when it came to the speaking. the whole thing was a huge undertaking. They must not have had time for acting coaches. Or, maybe they did and she might have been totally worse.
She was miscast - plain and simple. And, they HAD to have known it. that she couldn't speak, dance, or act. Why not Emmy Rossum (can act and sing Broadway)? Why? because the producers decided Carrie was such a market draw that people would overlook her weaknesses. Wrong.
Her reaction to the criticism shows how naive and dumbell-y she is not to realize how wrong she was.

In addition, Carrie is a country singer. That is another mortal sin especially to many on DU. Label something as 'country' and it gets crushed. To be sure, there is a lot of dreck in country music especially now. I have followed it for decades and I have never seen so many vapid country/pop performers singing about 'love, trucks, trains and home.' This is especially true of the male singers. The female singers fare better. Kacey Musgraves is a talented and edgy writer/singer. The Pistol Annies with Miranda Lambert make fun of everything.
