In addition, when they were rehearsing, there is no way that others didn't see what the critics saw. This was not produced by a middle school theater group. They should have tried everything and every trick to help her. She might still have bombed, bit it might not have been as awful.
Trying to help and not crush somebody is tricky. I'd bet Macdonald and others did what they could. Beyond a change in the lead or something else major, I'm not sure what would have helped.
Was she naive about it after hearing what she was told? You bet.
If she had truly known what it would take to really pull of that role, I think she would have either tried to prepare or she would have dropped it.
Carrie Underwood is nothing but a pro when preparing for her shows and other appearances. She has never been a diva. There is no way she would have wanted to bomb in this role. She loved the movie and the part. If she had a clue how it might come off, I don't think she would habe done it.
