(71,708 posts)The current indicated treatment for latent tuberculosis infection is isoniazid, which is highly hepatotoxic - really bad for the liver. We prescribe on a month-to-month basis for the 9-month treatment period. Prescription refill requires a clinic visit for assessment of possible symptoms of hepatotoxicity, and a physical exam. Plus, regular liver function tests. Any provider who doesn't require these steps as part of his treatment plan is heading onto shaky ethical ground.
If we didn't require these steps during the treatment period, I guarantee you someone would ask: "Why did they not take the necessary steps to ensure the patient's liver wasn't damaged?"
But when we take solid ethical steps to ensure good practice of medicine, we get the above: bad-tempered complaining because good medical care comes with some inconveniences.
