Jews were not considered white before WW2. Also, Irishmen were not considered white until after WW1. While we tend to think of race being constructed around skin color, in these two cases it was constructed around religion, Judaism and Roman Catholicism, both of which were considered to be outside the American norm. Oddly, Latinos were consider white until fairly recently. Lucy and Dezi do not get credit for the first TV interracial kiss because Cubans were considered white then.
