It's difficult to know how to best direct charity dollars, but I'm highly sensitized against being emotionally manipulated. Studies have shown that people will donate more money for a single sympathetic individual than 100 or 10,000, and it's apparent that Mr and Mrs Hagar have learned this lesson. It is also interesting to note that they haven't submitted a 2012 form 990.
Show me a video of the Beverly Hills rescue operation, the number of animals in your care and your adoption process and I'll lighten up.
There's no replacement for personal experience with the charity you're donating to, which for me means donate locally.
