The nonprofit world is awash with inefficient and wasteful organizations, dedicated only to fundraising.
I downloaded and reviewed their 2011 990 return and didn't find anything of concern. They spent about half of their $84,024 donations on animal care. The charity had $17,202 in the bank at the end of 2011 and they didn't take salaries. Given the polish, popularity and feedback that his videos get, I'd be surprised if his charity hasn't brought in far more money in 2012 and 2013 than it did previously. I hope they file their 2012 and 2013 returns soon.
If I weren't familiar with the local nonprofit landscape, I would send my donations to the United Way, they have a reasonably good process of validating the performance of organizations, channeling resources to the worthwhile programs and monitoring the outcomes.
In any event, living in the poor county that I do, I'll be damned if I'll send my donations to Beverly Hills - angels or not.
