as far as it goes, anyway. With political cartoons - as with modern art - there is a lot left unsaid.

Consider another interpretation . . . is he sinking? perhaps he is staying afloat only because of the elephant, without which he would sink of his own accord.

Of course that interpretation still does not account for some of his former supporters who are disillusioned because their illusions turned out to be merely their illusions.
