Malabsorption (common with Crohn's, Celiac Disease, ulcerative Colitis, etc)
Hypoparathyroidism (common in kidney disease)
Sunlight intolerance (lupus, sunlight allergy)
Dark skin tone
Etc
It's also painful.
I found this out the old-fashioned way: I'm deficient, and it's due to malabsorption, sunlight allergy and kidney disease
Not my dx; my doctor's and I take Rx supplementation.

I take Vitamin D as prescribed by my doctor cause it was low in my last blood test thing

Probably, certain infections or metabolic problems can decrease the production of vitamin D

That is not true if you are dark skinned and/or live in northern, cloudy latitudes. n/t
