(57,827 posts)about harassment, clearly linked to the epidemic of gang rapes and murders of women in that country. Although that post received over 125 recs, a handful of people found it an outrage, and have continued to pout and stomp over it. So if it makes you feel better to pretend this is about glancing at a woman in the supermarket, there is nothing I can do about that. Anyone with any reasonable degree of social skills knows how to behave in such situations. Some choose not to behave appropriately because their motives are hostile or predatory. There may be a few with poor or not fully developed social skills who need some guidance. However, what we have witnessed today is a few men who feel it is their right to ogle, harass and control public space--even going so far as to say that women who don't like it should stay home or wear Burkas. Like the men in India, it is about power for them. Only in this case these are largely powerless men who resent having to deal with women's opinions in public. They make a lot of noise in cyberspace because the anonymity of the keyboard emboldens them. Ultimately they are a dying breed, furious that we no longer live in the mid-20th century. Despite their sound and fury, time marches on.
