(33,424 posts)10. Very few people buy gold for the silly scenario given in the OP.
People buy gold as an insurance for an economic collapses of the order of Germany, post WW I. That was not an Apocalypse situation but it was a situation when paper money became almost worthless. People with gold did just fine.
