(33,424 posts)15. I agree fear is the driving factor in these ads.
That said I do believe in preparing for unknown disasters. Our cities are very dependent on a constant supply of food, electricity and water. In most cases the supply of those three items comes from outside the city -- sometime hundreds or even thousands of miles away. If something major happened there could be big problems. I keep a 3 month supply of food and water. Fortunately I live in an area where a lack of electricity would be an inconvenience but it would not kill me.
