I don't think most people really think about the consequences of an event that could take out electricity or cause normal societal channels to seize up. I'm not paranoid, but if we lose electricity or there is some kind of illness or natural disaster--many people would be completely screwed because they are ill prepared.
Life as we know it now--is a delicate balance. Many things could happen to kick our way of life off kilter. I love The Walking Dead for that reason. That show demonstrates that our current way of life--our rules, our energy dependence, our morality, how we feed ourselves--is dependent on a delicate web of current conditions remaining constant. Of course, TWD is an extreme, fictitious example--but there are plenty of real situations that could throw society into a new paradigm.
Always good to have *some* kind of cushion.
