I've been around dogs and other animals for a long time, and know that sometimes they do the most wonderful, amazing, yet inexplicable things. They don't know what this dog's past is, so they don't know what triggers this dog. It could be that this dog was indeed trained to be a security dog. It could be that this dog loves kids(actually most pits do), and recognized a threat to a child. Perhaps a previous owner used a knife to torture the dog and that triggered its response(I've a dog who is very, very tough to bathe because a previous owner used to torture the poor thing with water). To blanketly state that this couldn't happen is showing a great deal of ignorance about dogs.
