I've worked in an OBGYN clinic. They performed these kinds of ultrasounds for specific medical reasons such as assessing pelvic organs, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts. I've seen it used to assess masses and ectopic pregnancy. They've used it for fertility treatments.

My daughter had one for her pregnancy, but it was not required. It was not a medical necessity.
