(938 posts)TV smooths the way for important social change by normalizing it. When the mass culture, as represented by TV and movies, begins to adopt something, that goes out to the populace and brings them face-to-face with people and issues that they might not have encountered in their real lives up to that point. A lot of people point to the Kirk Uhura kiss (first interracial kiss on national TV) as a turning point, and do you think that the LGBT community would be at the level of acceptance it's found in recent decades without things like Will & Grace and basically the entire Bravo Channel line-up? If you do, I think that's kind of naive.
Duck Dynasty is actually a really dangerous show because it does pretty much the exact opposite of the trend for TV to move in a progressive direction.
