(174,572 posts)The rabies strain carried by raccoons tend to be limited to the east coast. In Texas, this strain of the rabbi virus has not yet been identified according to a friend who works in disease control. According to her, the virus strain that affects raccoons was limited to the Florida everglades until some nuts took some Florida raccoons up north for hunting and now the virus if common on the east coast.
In Texas, skunks and bats are the primary vectors for the rabbi virus. We have some aggressive raccoons at one of the parks where I used to camp and it took a padlock to keep the raccoons out of grub boxes. Bats are a very common vector for the virus and you should never pick up with your hands a dead bat.
If the animal control office is telling you to get the vaccine, then do so. If you live on the East Coast.
Good luck. The treatments are far less painful than in the old days.
