(22,057 posts)He had been lurking around where I live and one day he wanted food I guess. I had no food for him and he bit me on the arm.
The next day my arm hurt REALLY BAD and was all swollen up and wow did it ever hurt.
I went to the ER and was told that they needed to find that cat ASAP and if they could not find it or spot it, I'd have to get the series of rabies shots.
Luckily, said cat was spotted a few days later.
If it was rabid, it would have likely died not long after it bit me I was told.
I never knew anything about rabies and raccoons (we had those and skunks as well living under/around the duplex where I lived at that time).
In any event, I ended up being put on huge doses of penicillin and I did recover and fortunately the cat was not rabid as it was still around for a few years after I was bitten.
When an animal has rabies (there was a rabid skunk around here recently), they tend to do things they normally never do. In the case of the rabid skunk, it was running around during the day and how often does one see a skunk running around during the day? Answer: Not often -- in fact never seen one during the day running around.
Odd/unusual behavior is a symptom of a rabid animal.
I hope you are ok and if you can round up that raccoon, please do so and take it to the animal control center where they can determine whether or not it is rabid. I rather think it is not rabid for one reason: It is still alive.
Once an animal turns rabid, they tend to not live a whole lot longer I was told.
